1.Go to Recovery Console, login to the windows installation, At the command prompt, type cd system32 , . Type ren kernel32.dll kernel32.old –enter, Type map , and then press ENTER. Type expand drive \i386\kernel32.dl_ (where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD), and then press ENTER. For example:
Expand d:\i386\kernel32.dl_ *Note the underscore character after the "L" in Kernel32.dl_
The following message appears: Kernel32.dll 1 file(s) expanded. Then type exit to restart pc

**Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system

At the Windows XP Recovery Console command prompt (C:\WINDOWS>), perform the following steps:
Type the following command:cd \There must be one space between cd and \.
Press the key to display a C:\> prompt.
Type the following command:cd system~1\_resto~1Note the underscore character after the backslash.
NOTE:
An Access is denied message may appear. If so, follow the steps below:
Type the following command:cd windows\system32\config
Press the key.
Type the following command:ren system system.bck
Press the key.
Type the following command:exit
Press the key.The system will restart.
Begin again with the first step under Boot the Computer from the Windows XP CD and Start the Recovery Console.
Type the following command:dir
Press the key.Among other information, the dir command will list one or more directories, such as RP1, RP2, and RP3. These directories contain Windows XP Restore Point data.Make note of a recently created RP directory, but not one that was created in the past few minutes.
Type the following command:cd rpwhere equals the restore point data directory number (i.e. RP3).
Press the key.
Type the following command:cd snapshot
Press the key.
For either error message containing ...\CONFIG\SOFTWARE:
Type copy _registry_machine_software c:\windows\system32\config\software.
Press the key.
For the error message containing ...\CONFIG\SYSTEM:
Type copy _registry_machine_system c:\windows\system32\config\system.
Press the key.
NOTE:
If queried whether to replace the file, press the key and press the key.
Type the following command:exit
Press the key.The system will restart.
Remove the Windows XP CD from the drive as the system begins to restart.

***"hal.dll is missing or corrupt"

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD drive and restart the computer. Press the when prompted Press any key to boot from CD.
At the Welcome to Setup screen press to start the Recovery Console.
2. If prompted, select the number corresponding to the Windows installation you want to log into (usually C:\WINDOWS) and press .
3. Enter the Administrator password, if any, and press .
4. At the C:\WINDOWS> prompt, type cd \ and press . There is one space between cd and \ (the backslash).
5. Type bootcfg /rebuild and press . There is one space between bootcfg and / (the slash) and no space between / and rebuild.
6. When prompted Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All), type y, and press .
7. When Enter Load Identifier appears, type one of the following that best describes your operating system and press :
1. Windows XP Home Edition for Windows XP Home Edition
2. Windows XP Professional for Windows XP Professional
3. Windows XP Media Center for Windows XP Media Center
4. When Enter OS Load Options appears, type /NoExecute=OptIn /fastdetect and press .
5.Remove the Windows XP CD from the CD drive. Type Exit, and press to reboot into Windows XP.

**NTLDR or NTDETECT Is Missing or Corrupt

1. Boot the system to Recovery Console, Type map,
2. and press . Make note of the drive letter assigned to the optical (DVD or CD-ROM) drive.
3. Type copy x:\i386\ntldr c:\ (where x is the drive letter for the optical drive), and press .
4. Type copy x:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\ (where x is the drive letter for the optical drive), and press .
5. If you are prompted to overwrite the file, type y, and press .
6. Type exit and press .
7. As the computer restarts, remove the Windows XP CD.

Vista Stuck on configuring update screen at startup after Windows update

Go to Recovery Environment then command prompt,type the following
c: -> c: cd windows
c:\windows> cd winsxs
c:\windows\winsxs> del pending.xml
Restart pc then download:
